L.L. Bean received LEED Silver certification for its new Data Center in Freeport, Maine, in April. Designing the building was a challenge for L.L. Bean, but demonstrates the company’s commitment to sustainability. This is the first LEED Silver certification to be awarded to a data center in New England. Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc. (GMCR) is set to build the largest solar array in Vermont on top of its Waterbury distribution center this summer. Company officials say the project, a result of the company’s collaboration with the State of Vermont, Green Mountain Power, and groSolar, North America’s premier provider of solar energy solutions, is a beacon of what is possible for a renewable future. The amount of global waste currently in existence is becoming a highly troubling issue. Timberland Company has collaborated with Green Rubber™ to create two new footwear collections that help reduce this problem. The collections, which are due to be released in fall 2009, will feature outsoles manufactured from recycled rubber from discarded tires and displace 42 tons of virgin rubber with recycled rubber. The outsoles are made from a combination of Green Rubber compound and virgin rubber compound, providing an affordable means of reducing reliance on materials made from non-renewable petroleum resources.
